Every visitor to Tuscany sees the same three towns from the same three lookout points. Fair enough — they're beautiful. But the region's real character lives on the gravel roads between them, where a farmhouse trattoria serves whatever came out of the garden that morning and nobody is checking a guidebook.
We stopped for what we thought would be a quick coffee and left three hours later, full of pici and a stranger's family history.
Our designers route your days around these in-between places on purpose — a mid-morning stop at a hilltop cantina here, a detour through a cypress-lined lane there — so the famous towns are punctuation, not the whole sentence.
Go in late spring if you can. The wildflowers are still up, the light turns gold by five, and the tour buses haven't fully arrived yet.
