August in Santorini means shoulder-to-shoulder crowds at the caldera rail by sunset. Come mid-September instead and the same view is half-empty, the sea is still warm enough to swim, and restaurant tables open up without a week's notice.
We had the whole caldera walk to ourselves at golden hour — something I'm told almost never happens in July.
Smaller islands like Naxos and Folegandros come into their own this time of year too, with tavernas that feel like they're cooking for neighbours rather than tour groups.
Ferry schedules do thin out after early October, so our designers build island-hopping routes with that taper in mind.
